It’s that time of year when we share our top family travel memories of 2014. These are not necessarily our most popular posts – we’ll announce those in April – but they’re the posts that bring back our best family memories as we reflect on the year.

Here are our Top Ten for 2014:

Allison’s Top 5

In 2014, I celebrated my 40th birthday with an epic family vacation to New York City. Several close-to-home destinations in Utah make my list this year too. Near or far, there are always opportunities to make great family memories.

Snowbird Summer Resort

Snowbird – Salt Lake City, Utah

Snowbird is hands-down our favorite resort of 2014. We visited three times, in three seasons, and it was awesome every time. Ski or snowboard in the winter, go to a free family outdoor movie in the summer or soak up the festival atmosphere at Oktoberfest in the fall.

Winter at Bryce Canyon National Park – Utah

My husband and I visited Bryce Canyon National Park in Southern Utah without our kids for his birthday weekend in January. If you think that Bryce Canyon is beautiful in the summer, you should see the snow-capped hoodoos in the winter!

Lake Placid Olympics

Olympic Winter Games Sites – Lake Placid, New York

I’ve been a little geeky about the Olympic Winter Games ever since my hometown of Salt Lake City hosted them in 2002. So, seeing the Olympic sites was high on my list when we visited Lake Placid, New York last summer. Lake Placid hosted the games in 1932 and 1980.

Raft Dinosaur National Monument

River Rafting in Dinosaur National Monument – Vernal, Utah

River rafting in Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument was my kids’ first-ever rafting experience and they loved it! The rapids were thrilling, the scenery was beautiful and our guides from Adrift Adventures kept it fun and kept us safe. Love petroglyphs? I do, and we saw some really good ones on this trip too.

Tips for visiting the Statue of Liberty

Visiting the Statue of Liberty – New York City

I cannot choose a single favorite destination from our vacation in New York City, but I’m listing my Statue of Liberty post here because you can’t really say you’ve been to NYC if you haven’t seen it. We took the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and that day is a special memory for my family.

Katie’s Top 5

Tough choice to pick just five! My youngest son turned three this year, and we embraced the road trip. Our family drove through 14 states this year on various road trips, and flew to Utah once for a family reunion. Road tripping can be tedious, but there is something indescribable about seeing the country as the miles tick by, and I love it.

fastpassVisiting Walt Disney World – Florida

Our first road trip was to introduce our youngest kids to Walt Disney World.  There is something magical about the parks, and Disney knows how to do it right.  I laugh when I think of dressing everyone in black garbage sacks before we rode on the Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom so we wouldn’t be soaked for the rest of the day. With five children, I have mastered budget travel and shared some tips on saving money at Disney World here.

Myrtle Beach state parkKicking summer off at Myrtle Beach – South Carolina

The beach is my family’s happy place, so we spend plenty of time there in the summer.  We took our first trip to Myrtle Beach to visit my cousins, and we fell in love with relaxed pace of South Carolina, the beautiful beaches, and the spanish moss everywhere.

outer banksSurfing at the Outer Banks – North Carolina

We spent a week in Duck, North Carolina in July.  My teenage daughters and my husband surfed day and night, while my younger kids and I body boarded and built sand castles. Fun friends and warm sand was the perfect way for our busy family to relax together. Ghost crabbing is one of our favorite summer traditions. With 200 miles of beach to explore, the Outer Banks is my favorite summer destination.

Elbow BeachRomantic Getaway – Bermuda

My husband and I spent a long weekend in Bermuda, and it left me longing to go back to this beautiful island.  My favorite memories from this weekend were dinner on the beach at the stunning Elbow Beach resort, and the day we spent on a Boston whaler exploring  the Somerset Bay.

Museum of Science and Industry – Chicago, Illinois

I haven’t had time yet to tell you about our wonderful Thanksgiving trip to Chicago to visit my brother’s family, but we had a great time returning to our old stomping grounds and taking our kids to visit our favorite places.  The highlight for our family was six hours at the Museum of Science and Industry, which is the best museum I have ever visited.  I was giddy to show my kids all the amazing things to museum has to offer.  Don’t miss this one if you are ever near Chicago!
