Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort in Lake Placid, New York was the second leg of our recent New York vacation. We spent nearly a week in New York City and when we were offered the opportunity to visit the family-owned Golden Arrow, it seemed like the perfect place to unwind and recharge for the last few days of our trip. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary during our stay, and the Golden Arrow was an excellent place to celebrate a special occasion.
Lake Placid is located several hours north of New York City in Adirondack Park – a six million acre state park that has been preserved through a public and private partnership. It’s a beautiful part of the country, filled with mountains, forests, lakes and lots of fun activities for families. It’s a place where you can escape the city and the summer heat. For me, the Adirondacks rank high on the list of classic American vacation destinations.
Here is what we love about Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort.
1. Mirror Lake
Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is the only resort on Mirror Lake with a private beach. Lounge chairs line the shore, and beach toys, life jackets, canoes, paddle boats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and a row boat are available for guest use at no additional charge. There is a roped-off swimming zone and a floating dock.
The water was warm enough for swimming in early June, as I found when I capsized a canoe while it was still tied to the dock. My son and I were about to take the canoe out, when he changed his mind and climbed back onto the dock. Without his weight in the front, I quickly lost my balance and tipped over. My family has loved sharing this story, and I’m sure we’ll be laughing about it for years.
2. Huge variety of rooms
Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has grown gradually over the years, and it has built many different rooms to accommodate a variety of guest needs and requests. In addition to traditional hotel rooms, there are many specialty suites for families to choose from. Choose from suites with additional bedrooms, whirlpools or kitchenettes that accommodate up to 9 people. Pet-friendly rooms are available.
We stayed in a Skylight suite, which has a king size bed and a small separate room with a twin trundle bed and TV for our children. After a week of small New York City hotel rooms, we all loved having the extra space and privacy. We also loved our balcony overlooking the lake, roomy bathroom with whirlpool, mini-fridge and microwave. We didn’t use the fireplace, but I’m sure it would be cozy for a winter retreat in Lake Placid.
3. Lots of on-site amenities
The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has lots of complimentary amenities. These include an indoor pool, steam room, sauna, fitness room, racquetball court, game room, and library – many of which have been recently remodeled. With so many amenities and so many rooms, built at different times, the resort is sprawling. We got lost more than once trying to find our way back to our room from the pool.
Swim time tops my kids’ list of priorities on every vacation, and the indoor pool at the Golden Arrow saved a rainy day during our stay. The pool is spacious and attractive with Adirondack chairs for lounging. There is a wading pool for young children and two hot tubs. My husband and I agree that the pool was colder than the lake, but that didn’t stop our kids from having a great time in it.
4. Convenient location
Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is located on Main Street in Lake Placid, which is also where you’ll find lots of fun shops and restaurants. We liked the pizza place across the street so much, we ate there twice. The sandwich shop a few doors down is a good place to pick up a picnic for an outing.
Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, and the Herb Brooks Arena where the Miracle on Ice hockey game took place is practically across the street. There is a small, but worthwhile Olympic Museum at the arena as well.
5. Generations Restaurant
Generations is the on-site restaurant at Golden Arrow. We tried Generations for breakfast and dinner and our family gives it a thumbs up. The menu features dishes made with local ingredients and the quality is evident in the flavor. The atmosphere is casual, so you can feel comfortable bringing your children here. Breakfast entrees range from $6-$14. Dinner entrees include steak, chicken, seafood, pasta and sandwiches, which range from $12-$28 each.
6. Golden Arrow is green
Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has received several awards for its commitment to preserving the environment, including Platinum Certification in Audubon International’s rigorous eco rating program. visit the resort’s Green Page to learn more about all of Golden Arrow’s environmental initiatives that will hopefully keep the Adirondacks clean and beautiful for generations to come.
7. Golden Arrow is affordable
Summer is peak season at the Golden Arrow, and right now, a basic double-queen room can be had on a weeknight for under $200. During our visit in early June, that same room with a view of the lake was available for around $100. Ski season and leaf season in the fall would also be good times to visit. Look for Groupons during spring and fall to book a room at the Golden Arrow for as little as $79 per night.
If you’re considering a summer stay, I recommend planning for early or late in the season to get the best rates and all the fun without the crowds. You may also wish to request a first-floor lakeside room, which has direct access to the beach.
Golden Arrow is offering a couple of deals to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2014. Book rooms for three or more generations of your family, and receive a 10% discount. In November and December 2014, request the 40th Anniversary Package when you book your room and pay $40 per person, midweek. There is a 2-person minimum and kids stay free. This offer expires December 23, 2014. If you’ll be celebrating an anniversary at the Golden Arrow, as we did, let them know and you’ll receive a complimentary bottle of wine or sparkling juice at check-in.
For these reasons, we recommend Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort for your family vacation, family reunion or romantic getaway.
Disclosure: We received complimentary lodging at Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort so that we could experience the resort and review it for other families. We also received complimentary meals at Generations Restaurant. All opinions expressed here are my own.
