The natural wonders near Moab, Utah are a happy place for my husband and me. The first time we went there together was a few weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Contemplating the grandness and beauty of God's creations brought peace to our souls and that feeling about Moab has never left us.
I have been to Moab at several times since then in January or February and it's the best time to go. Here's what you can expect from Moab in the winter.
Winter Weather
Moab winters tend to be mild and sunny. In my experience, mid-day temperatures tend to be in the mid 50's, Fahrenheit. The red sandstone soaks up the sunshine and it's perfect for hiking.
Pack layers, including coats, gloves and hats. Layer up or down as the temperature changes. You may want hiking boots with more traction than usual in case you encounter snow or ice along the trail
Most winter days are sunny, but it does snow in Moab. Watch the weather forecast. Be safe and flexible if a winter storm affects your plans.

Things to Do
There are a lot of reasons for lovers of the outdoors to visit Moab. For us, it's the national parks. The entrance to Arches National Park is just outside of town and the most accessible part of Canyonlands National Park is about 35 miles away. Dead Horse Point State Park is on the way to Canyonlands and, despite its strange name, it should not be missed.
Jeep and mountain biking enthusiasts will also find world-class trails in the Moab area. If you or your kids are into dinosaurs, there are some fantastic fossils just outside of town.

Off Season Rates
One of my favorite parts of visiting Moab in the winter is finding off-season rates. There are plenty of hotels from familiar brands. We like the Aarchway Inn. It's one of the closest hotels to Arches National Park. It's an affordable hotel with a complimentary breakfast buffet, heated pool and a playground.

You'll also find familiar fast-food chains. However, most full-service restaurants in Moab are local. The town is a little slower in the winter, but most visitors will find the amenities they need any time of year.

My wife and I have been visiting Moab for the past 17 years … same hotel and same room … Best Western Canyonlands Plus … rockhounding is our adventure … Moab is “new” each time we visit … when I die, I want my ashes thrown to the winds somewhere in Klondike Bluffs South! Too bad Utah doesn’t give a tax break … I served 44 years in the military and would have loved retiring in Moab … not to be the case however … but visiting for a few weeks at a time is important to us and we will continue our Moab adventures as long as we can still move!
