Need a place to stay in New York City? This Wyndham hotel is a good option.
On our family vacation to New York City last June, we avoided high Manhattan hotel prices by staying in Queens. The Long Island City neighborhood of Queens is just one subway stop from midtown Manhattan and many of the hotels in this up and coming area offer great skyline views. One of the best is Wyndham Garden Long Island City.
Here's what you can expect from a stay at Wyndham Garden Long Island City.
Our room at the Wyndham Garden Long Island City was clean, new and modern. It was compact and had double beds, like most hotel rooms in New York City, but was adequate for our family of four. Several of my top amenities for families were included, such as a mini fridge and complimentary Wi-Fi. The mini-fridge came in handy when we picked up breakfast supplies from a nearby supermarket and had real New York pizza delivered to the hotel.
My favorite thing about the Wyndham Garden was their attention to detail. When our pizza was delivered, the front desk had paper plates and utensils ready. The desk in our room had lots of electrical plugs on top, which made it easy to re-charge and keep track of all of our devices. Our room had Direct TV with over 100 channels. We usually spend our evenings winding down at the hotel and we are always grateful to find a good selection of family-friendly programming instead of just the basic hotel channel package. These may seem obvious, but that doesn't mean other hotels have them.
Tip: Be sure to request a Manhattan view when you book your room. Our room did not have a view of the Manhattan skyline, but rooms with skyline views are available on the upper floors of the hotel.

Wyndham Garden Long Island City's top amenities include an on-site restaurant, fitness room and complimentary shuttle. The fitness center is open 24 hours, and like the rest of the hotel, everything in it is new. We didn't try the restaurant because it was closed during our stay, but we found a small market next door where you can pick up hot and cold breakfast and lunch entrees. It's hard to beat for a quick and inexpensive meal.
The hotel's complimentary shuttle was a good way to get to and from the nearest subway station, but we didn't mind the walk, so that's what we did most of the time. The shuttle leaves at designated times from the hotel and is available on-call to pick you up from the station. The shuttle will also drive you to and from local restaurants, since there isn't much near the hotel.
Did I mention that Wyndham Garden is just one subway stop from Manhattan? The hotel is three blocks from the E and M subway stations at Court Sq-23 St. Manhattan-bound trains arrive every few minutes, and it's only a 10 minute trip from there to popular destinations such as Times Square, Broadway and 5th Avenue.
Long Island City is a neighborhood in transition, and it may not be a good fit for all families. It used to be a rough industrial area and evidence of the past remains. However, we never felt unsafe walking near the hotel with our children.
In recent years, developers have realized Long Island City's potential. More than 20 hotels, including Wyndham Garden, and a number of luxury high-rise apartments have been built. Citibank and JetBlue have established offices, and new construction projects are in progress all over Long Island City. If it has been a while since you visited New York City, give Long Island City – and Wyndham Garden – a second look.
We recommend Wyndham Garden Long Island City for families. It is affordable and attractive, and it offers an array of thoughtful and complimentary amenities that made our stay better.
Disclosure: We received a discounted rate at Wyndham Garden Long Island City so that we could experience the hotel and review it for other families. All opinions are my own.
