Merry Christmas!

Looking for a fun winter getaway? How about St. George, Utah?

We were invited to visit Tuacahn during the Christmas season, and found that it is a great time to visit sunny St. George. My 10-year-old son and I made it a one-on-one weekend.

The weather was unseasonably warm so we enjoyed some of the city’s top-notch outdoor activities in short sleeves during the day, and soaked up the Christmas spirit at Tuacahn in the evening.

Whether you live near St. George, or are looking for a fun winter getaway, add Tuacahn’s Christmas in the Canyon to your list. We were there on the first Saturday in December and were impressed by how much there was to do.

Here are 5 ways to enjoy Tuacahn at Christmas time.

Fairy Tale Christmas

Buy tickets now if you’d like to see this popular new Christmas musical. The indoor Hafen Theater is small and most dates are nearly sold out.

Fairy Tale Christmas is a brand new musical by Scott and Michael McLean that is premiering at Tuacahn for Christmas 2017. This show is the reason we were visiting St. George – though honestly, we never need much of a reason. My family loves theater and my kids perform in a couple of shows each year, so we were especially excited to see Fairy Tale Christmas.

Fairy Tale villains kidnap Santa Claus in hopes of taking back the endings of their stories. Heroes and villains end up working together to deliver toys to every child in the world before Christmas morning. The characters are familiar, but the story and music are original. It’s an uplifting tale of optimism and redemption.

The show features a small cast that play multiple roles. Innovative onstage costume and character changes heighten the comedy and artistry. High-tech digital scenery allow for elaborate sets that wrap around the theater and change quickly between scenes.

My son and I both enjoyed this show and we do recommend it.

Live Nativity

The Live Nativity at Tuacahn is presented in the outdoor amphitheatre with those gorgeous red rocks as the backdrop. I really wanted to see it, but could not do the Live Nativity and Fairy Tale Christmas on the same night. There are two programs each evening, at 7 or 8 pm. Each lasts about 20 minutes.

Seats are not assigned, so arrive early for best selection. The Live Nativity is just $2 per person for ages 3 and up. We saw extended families and groups buying tickets together for grandparents. young children and all ages in between. What a wonderful holiday tradition!

Ice Skating

Outdoor ice skating is new at Tuacahn this year, and it was a popular activity during our visit. old Temperatures were well above freezing that night and I wondered how they keep the ice frozen. Turns out, it’s simulated ice. From a distance we could not tell the difference.

Train Ride

Tuacahn is covered in twinkling holiday lights and the open air train is a great way to see them. The train is brightly lit and decorated for the holidays.

Visit Santa Claus

Santa Claus visits Tuacahn on most evenings through the Christmas season. There is no charge to visit and take photos. There was also no line when we were there.
