It’s so fun to look through family photos and blog posts at the end of each year and remember all the fun things we have done as a family. Here are our top travel memories from 2013.

Allison’s Top 5

Allison’s travel year didn’t begin until after her son was declared cancer-free in March. The family celebrated with a Spring Break trip to San Diego. Nine months later, he is healthy and we are looking back on a lot of special experiences. Here are a few of our favorites.

utah fly fishing

5. Fly fishing – Midway, Utah

I was both delighted and terrified when Rocky Mountain Outfitters invited us out for a day of fly fishing. After I overcame my “fish issues,” we had a great time. We tried something new and enjoyed the beautiful scenery in Utah’s mountains.

San Diego Zoo

4. San Diego Zoo – San Diego, California

We visited both the San Diego Zoo and its sister zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2013. We love the pandas and koalas at the Zoo and the Cheetah Run and wide open spaces of the Safari Park.

Zion Narrows

3. The Narrows – Zion National Park, Utah

We ventured into The Narrows of Zion National Park with my extended family in July. We hiked in the Virgin River and saw some of the most beautiful parts of my favorite national park.

LEGOLAND tips, Carlsbad, California

2. LEGOLAND California Resort – Carlsbad, California

We enjoyed LEGOLAND so much, we visited the California theme park twice in 2013. The first time was during Spring Break, just after my LEGO loving son was declared cancer-free. The second time was in October, after we were given free passes through our stay at Give Kids the World Village in Florida.

Disney World Make-a-Wish

1. Walt Disney World – Orlando, Florida

Thanks to Make-a-Wish Utah, my son’s wish to visit Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida was granted. It was a once-in-a-lifetime VIP experience and we had a wonderful time. It was also Star Wars Weekend, which made it extra-special for our young padawans.

Katie’s Top 5

Katie joined Tips for Family Trips in May of this year and has loved sharing her family’s travel experiences. It’s been fun to look back and reflect on our favorite travel memories from 2013.  Here are our top 5:

Hermitage Terrace, St. Lucia

5.  Hiking Gros Piton – St. Lucia

Our travel year started with a couple’s trip for my husband and me to St. Lucia. With five kids, a chance to get away and spend time with my husband is a dream come true, and we loved every minute of our vacation.  One highlight was the very challenging but rewarding hike to the top of Gros Piton.

monuments at night

4.  Washington DC Monuments at Night – Washington DC

When friends and family come to town, our favorite tourist outing is the Washington DC monuments.  This summer we took my niece to see them at night and loved the cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and beautiful lights on the monuments.  It inspires patriotism in me and my children when we remember the great sacrifices made by groups and individuals to preserve the freedoms we have.

USS Midway Museum

3.  USS Midway Museum – San Diego, California

We went to San Diego for a family reunion in July and thoroughly enjoyed our day at the USS Midway Museum. The kids loved wandering on the flight deck, climbing in and out of airplanes, and listening to the audio tour tell stories of sailors and airmen in World War II.

Harpers Ferry zip line

2.  Harpers Ferry Canopy Tour – Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

We took our oldest three children to zip line at the Harpers Ferry Canopy Tour in the fall.  It was refreshing to do an active adventure with our older children and enjoy the beautiful trees and Potomac river while we zipped along.  This outing was one of my kids’ favorite things we did all summer.

swallow falls state park

1.  Swallow Falls State Park – Oakland, Maryland

We went to Deep Creek Lake to celebrate getting out of school in June.  Our favorite day was a hike through Swallow Falls State Park.  A short hike takes you past four waterfalls of varying heights, and you can find places to play in the river along the way.  We wore out more than one swimming suit sliding down the rock “water slides” and making great memories in the process.

Do you have a favorite family travel memory from 2013? We hope you’ll share it with us in the comments.

Happy New Year! We wish you a great 2014, filled with many happy memories.

Hi there! I am the founder of Tips for Family Trips. I am a married mom of two children, ages 10 and 12, living near Salt Lake City, Utah. We took our first child on a two-week road trip when she was four weeks old and we have been traveling as a family ever since. We love to get out of the house to see and do fun things, both far away and in our own neighborhood.
