I recently returned from St. Augustine, Florida with my two young kids. This Florida destination is known as the Historic Florida Coast because St. Augustine is one of the oldest cities in the US.
My kids enjoy learning new things through travel, but explaining history to a six year old is often a challenge. St. Augustine Florida does a perfect job sharing history in a fun and interesting way that kept even my youngest entertained. I was pleasantly surprised at all the attractions geared toward all age groups.
Here are 15 fun things to do in St. Augustine, Florida.
St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum is a fun educational museum that makes you feel like you are back in time with the pirates. This museum houses a huge collection of artifacts and a real pirate treasure chest in addition to interactive displays.
St. Augustine Lighthouse is a right across from the alligator farm, but go here first before the kids get tired so that they can enjoy climbing the 219 steps to the top.
Alligator Farm is more than just seeing an alligator show and viewing a few gators. This St. Augustine attraction was one of my kids favorite places on the trip. There are tons of exhibits that are both educational and interesting, several wildlife shows a day, alligator feedings, a playground and a fun zip line that kids can do on their own!
Fiesta Falls Miniature Golf offers a break from the history attractions with 18 holes through caves, ships and lush landscapes. You can follow the golf with some ice cream!
Potters Wax Museum is similar to the popular Madame Tssauds but with a much more traditional, authentic feel. It is the very first wax museum in the US and has hundreds of celebrity and historical wax figures on display.
Ripley's Believe It or Not in St. Augustine is the very first permanent Ripley's location that is set within a castle. The three floors are filled with over 300 odd exhibits from all over the world.
Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park combines history with legend. I was surprised to find more than just the Fountain of Youth here. You can easily spend a couple of hours seeing all the exhibits. My kids were fascinated with all the peacocks. And of course be sure to drink from the fountain.
Whetstone Chocolate Factory offers tasting tours where not only do you see how chocolate is made but you get to taste the different kinds. This is perfect for your family members with a sweet tooth.
Castillo de San Marcos is a great fort for the kids because you are free to explore at your leisure for as long or as little as you would like inside and outside. The views are fantastic!
Oldest Wooden School House is a walk through attraction that is quick but fun to see. Showing kids how children were educated many years ago was a fun addition to the trip.
Old Town Trolley Tour is great if you want to see a large number of attractions like the ones on this list. The best part about the on and off tour is that tickets are good for three consecutive days. There are a total of 23 attractions within the popular areas of St. Augustine Service is also included to St. Augustine Beach included with your ticket.
Authentic Old Jail offers engaging tours through the cellblocks of the actual jail from early 1900s. Our tour guide held true to the character of a prisoner as he shared historical facts about the building.
Dolphin Conservation Center at Marineland will require a little of a drive but worth a visit with the kids to learn about sea life conservation and watch the dolphins.
Oldest Store Museum located next to the jail is a short but cute tour where you are walked through the store and treated like customers. The guides act like the storekeepers and lead everyone around the store explaining all the products from bikes, to medicines and washing machines.
The Beach! No trip to Florida is complete without some time enjoying the beautiful beaches.
Disclosure: We received complimentary tickets to a number attractions from St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches visitors & Convention Bureau for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.
