Looking for a family-friendly hotel in San Diego with a great pool and convenient location?
I had the opportunity to spend a couple of nights at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay in San Diego last November. It was cold and snowy at home, but I enjoyed warm sunshine, swaying palms and morning walks by the marina.
Do your kids love pool time? It was warm enough for that too! Here is what you need to know to decide if the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is right for your family:
Two words: WATER SLIDES! Hyatt Regency Mission Bay has a beautiful pool area with several pools and two water slides. Had my kids been with me, they would have spent every spare minute here. As you can see, the slides are fun enough to set this pool apart, but not too scary for most kids.
There are several pools, lots of lounge chairs and a Swim Bar and Lounge, which serves casual fare. There is also an on-site spa. So, save some of your vacation just to relax and enjoy some family pool time.
My room was on the second floor of the Tower and I found it to be clean, spacious and comfortable. It was tastefully decorated in a clean modern style. I had a private patio with seating that had a partial view of the marina. Many rooms have beautiful views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Ocean, or Hyatt's attractive gardens.
I had a chance to visit with a representative of the hotel, and he mentioned that the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay has made specific efforts to appeal to women and families. Some of their family-friendly services include Pack-n-Plays upon request, a kid-friendly room service menu, diaper and formula delivery and babysitting services.
I think that Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is doing some good things for families, but could still do a few simple things to step up their game. My room did not have a mini refrigerator and not all rooms have complimentary Wi-Fi. The selection of TV channels for kids was somewhat lacking as well.
Hyatt Regency Mission Bay has three on-site restaurants. One is the Swim Bar and Lounge. The Red Marlin and Einstein's Bagels are both on the property as well, with lovely marina views and outdoor seating options. I tried both. Einstein's was a familiar chain and I enjoyed a fresh bagel with cream cheese and juice each morning. Einstein's is situated directly above the fitness room and along the walking path, so it's a good stop just before or after a morning workout.
The Red Marlin Restaurant is a steak and seafood restaurant, with lots of foodie fare on the menu. The scallops are a local favorite, but I ordered the Chili Rubbed Skirt Steak and found it to be tender and flavorful. The desserts were delicious too! The restaurant has a kids' menu, with traditional favorites like spaghetti and meatballs. It is also open for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant was not crowded on the November weekday that I visited, but I still recommend making a reservation – especially if you want a waterfront view.
There are not many restaurants within walking distance, but there was a fish and chips place next door, and many other restaurants within a short drive.
SeaWorld is just a mile down the road, and if renting a kayak or wave runner is your idea of family fun, Hyatt Regency Mission Bay could not be nearer the marina. Check with the concierge for more information about whale watching tours, sport fishing or sailboats. The hotel is convenient for activities on Mission Bay or the Pacific Ocean.
I enjoyed my stay at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay and recommend it for families – especially those planning to visit Sea World or play in the water.
