Does the idea of booking a family-friendly hotel in New York City feel overwhelming? It did to us. There are so many choices, and if you're not familiar with the city, it can be difficult to narrow them down. The other challenge to booking a New York City hotel is price. A hotel that might cost $150 in Salt Lake City or San Diego can cost $300 or more per night in Manhattan.
Hoping to keep control of our vacation budget, we scouted hotels outside of Manhattan and soon found that there are a lot of family friendly hotels in Queens that are just 10-15 minutes from top Manhattan attractions by subway. Even better, hotels outside of Manhattan are usually a lot easier on the wallet.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City is a new hotel that has a great location for $100 less per night than comparable hotels in Manhattan. Here is what you can expect at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View.
Location is one of the best reasons to choose the Holiday Inn Manhattan View. We were given a room on the 16th floor, and when we saw our view of the Manhattan skyline, our jaws dropped. We watched the sun set behind the city, and before long the Empire State Building, the Queensboro Bridge and the rest of Manhattan glittered under the night sky. It was icing on our New York City vacation.
Here is a photo of the Empire State Building that my husband took as he lounged on one of the beds.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View is just one block from a subway station, which was the other reason that we loved the location. Manhattan-bound N or Q trains come by every couple of minutes, and the hotel is just a few stops from Central Park, Times Square and Rockefeller Center.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View is located in an up and coming neighborhood in Long Island City and evidence of its industrial history remains. New hotels, high-rise condos, and big name corporate offices are popping up everywhere, but this is still a neighborhood in transition. We never felt unsafe, but this is one reason that the Holiday Inn Manhattan View may not be right for every family.
Tiny hotel rooms are the norm in New York City, but not at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View. We have stayed in three different hotels in Queens and our room at the Holiday Inn was the biggest. I think our beds were actually queen-size instead of the doubles we found everywhere else in New York City.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View is new and clean with updated decor. Our room included a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi. Our room had a full-length balcony with seating. Not all rooms have balconies and great skyline views, so be sure to request one if it's a priority. Rooms have showers, but not bathtubs. This was not a problem for us, but when we had little children who didn't do showers, the lack of a tub would have been inconvenient.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View has two on-site restaurants, Rio Grande and 39 Above. Kids under 12 eat free!
We enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning at the Rio Grande. It included a good variety of hot and cold breakfast items including eggs, potatoes, sausage, cereals, breads, pastry, fresh fruit and yogurt. Breakfast is not complimentary. We thought it was good, but if you prefer, you can stock your mini-fridge with inexpensive fare from the small grocery across the street.
The neighborhood dining scene was not yet as well developed as we would have liked. There weren't many other restaurants within walking distance, though Queens is filled with diverse ethnic cuisine. We wanted New York pizza and Chinese food, and had both delivered to the hotel on different nights. The staff at the front desk is very helpful and will provide menus and send up plates and cutlery upon request.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan View was a good choice for our family. We recommend this hotel for its great location, comfy rooms and competitive prices.
Disclosure: We received a discount on our room and complimentary breakfasts at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View so that we could experience this hotel and review it for other families. I was not compensated for this post and all opinions are my own.

Need help getting around? A rental car might be nice to have if you'll be spending a lot of time exploring Queens, but in Manhattan the subway is a lot easier way to get around. Read my tips for using the New York City subway HERE.
