On a recent family vacation to New York City, we had the opportunity to spend a night at Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia Airport Hotel in Queens. Here's what you need to know to decide if this hotel is right for your family.
Our room at Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia was clean, comfortable and modern. Like most NYC hotel rooms, it was not particularly spacious, but it was adequate for our family of four. The beds were doubles, not queen size. The rooms have free Wi-Fi and in-room refrigerators – must have amenities for families.
I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the hotel was. I worried that airplane noise would be a problem, but I noticed none during our stay.
If you have researched family hotels in New York City, you probably know how rare it is to find a hotel swimming pool there. Not only does Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia have an outdoor pool, but it's large for a hotel pool and it has a sun deck with lots of chairs. That's great news for families like mine who like to spend days exploring the city and spend evenings relaxing at the hotel – preferably in a pool.
I was also impressed by the size of the fitness room, which was larger than most I have seen in hotels of this type. There were lots of machines to choose from, and when I stopped in during the evening, they were all open.
Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia has an on-site restaurant, the Big Apple Bar and Grille. A breakfast buffet is available each morning for an additional cost. Dinner and take out are available as well. We did not try the restaurant, but I liked its stylish decor and private high-tech seating options.
Depending on your travel plans and priorities, the location of Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia is either excellent or terrible. It's an excellent location if you want to be near LaGuardia Airport and major roads. As you can see in this photo, which was taken from our room, the hotel couldn't be much closer to the airport.
Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia has a free shuttle to and from LaGuardia Airport. We called from the Hotel kiosk near Baggage Claim and the shuttle pulled up shortly after we reached the curb. Our flight arrived late in the evening, and we were glad to check into the hotel just minutes later.
Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia is close to many airport car rental agencies, and parking for private vehicles and rentals is available for a fee. If you're driving your own car or renting, the hotel is a short drive from restaurants, attractions and shopping in Queens. The hotel is located just off of Grand Central Parkway and near Brooklyn Queens Expressway.
The downside of the Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia's location is that it is not within walking distance of restaurants, attractions or shopping in Queens, nor a subway stop for the popular attractions of Manhattan. To reach Times Square via public transit, you will need to take a bus from the hotel to the subway station, then take the subway into Manhattan. The trip could take up to an hour each way.
Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia contracts with a car service that will take you wherever you like, or you can take the shuttle back to the airport to pick up a regular taxi. For the car service, which will arrive quickly and pick you up from the lobby in a clean black car, a local drop in Queens cost us $10 and a ride to the other side of Queens was $25. We liked the car service when we were moving all our luggage, but we preferred using the subway and buses during the rest of our trip.
Overall, we liked the Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia and we recommend it. If visiting popular New York City attractions is your priority, and you're using public transportation, then this hotel would not be my first choice. However, if pool time tops your family's list, then Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia is a good bet.
Disclosure: We were hosted by Courtyard Marriott LaGuardia at no charge so that we could experience the hotel and review it for other families. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
