Want a great tip for Disneyland?
See the Frozen – Live at the Hyperion show in California Adventure.
The Hyperion is a big, beautiful, air-conditioned theater with plush seats located near the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. It holds about 1,800 people and is more comfortable than the real Broadway theater where we saw Matilda in New York City. Don’t underestimate how good an hour off your feet in a soft chair will feel in the afternoon.
Frozen – Live at the Hyperion is a lavish stage version of the movie, condensed into just under an hour. All your favorite characters and songs are there. Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Hans and the ensemble are excellent. Sven, Olaf and the trolls are puppets, and so well acted that I nearly forgot the puppeteers were there. Creative adaptations for the stage keep the show fresh and interesting, while keeping the focus on the relationships and messages of this beloved modern classic.
Here is what you need to know to have the best experience seeing the new Frozen show at Disneyland.
Frozen is included in your park pass
You do not need to pay extra to see the Frozen show at Disneyland. It’s included in your Park Hopper or Disney California Adventure Park ticket. There are currently three showtimes every afternoon.
Aladdin played in the Hyperion for more than a decade and a longer version of the show is now on Broadway in New York City. You’ll pay at least $100 per ticket to see Aladdin on Broadway, so having Frozen included in your California Adventure pass is a great value. This is a good opportunity to introduce young children to live theatre, in a venue where they are always welcome.
I’ve found that the air conditioning in the Hyperion can get a little chilly after I’ve been seated for awhile. I pulled on my light sweater about halfway through the show. Also, be aware that the volume of this show is loud, but not any more so than everything else in the park.
Get a FASTPASS
This show is popular, so FASTPASS is available. Pick up a FASTPASS early in the day to guarantee your seats to Frozen – Live at the Hyperion and minimize the time you spend in line before the show. FASTPASS can be found at machines to the left of the theater and are distributed on a first come, first served basis. You cannot choose your show.
Getting a FASTPASS for Frozen – Live at the Hyperion will not keep you from getting a FASTPASS for other attractions.
If you do not get a FASTPASS, there will be a standby line for each show. Unless the park is at its most crowded, you should still be able to see the show if you arrive 15-30 minutes early.
Seats in the Hyperion are not assigned. You can choose your row after you enter the theater, but will be asked to move all the way down and fill every seat.
Don’t sit on the front row
My daughter and I sat in the center of the second row, and it was actually a little too close. We had a great view of the stage and actors, who occasionally looked directly at kids in the front rows. However, the production occasionally extended almost mid-way into the Orchestra section. We pretty much missed the huge ice chandelier at Elsa’s castle because it was directly over our heads. And, as Elsa built to the climax of “Let it Go,” she was actually behind us for a moment on her moving staircase.
Unless you’re first into the theatre, you’ll want to just get whatever seats you can. If you do get to pick your seats, I believe that the best seats for this show are at the front of the Mezzanine (first tier) or middle of the Orchestra (floor).
Disclosure: Disneyland hosted me and my daughter for the premiere of Frozen Live at the Hyperion for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.
