Planning a trip to Berlin?

We have lived in Germany off and on for 5 years. We also have kids ranging from 16 years down to a 1 year old. It's challenging to find something for everyone to engage in and enjoy. Luckily, Berlin has it all, and is one of our favorite cities.

Here are out top museum picks for kids in Berlin.

ModellPark Berlin

ModellPark Berlin is a cool park full of dollhouse-size replicas of all the most important sights and monuments in Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate and Victory Column are just a few of the models.  The miniature city of Berlin will make your kids feel like giants, plus there are train rides and even horse drawn carriages at the park.  My kids loved seeing everything in a smaller size and it really helped them get a feel for the city.

The park is open April – September from 10 AM – 6 PM and 10 AM – 5 PM through October. Admission is only 4.50€ for Adults 18 and over, 2.50€ for kids 6-17, and under 6 is free. This is a wonderful way to spend your morning, and see all the sights of Berlin with your kids in one place.

The Water Museum – WasserMuseum

The WasserMuseum is a huge indoor and outdoor museum that lets the kids explore how water works are built, and their history. It also offers an outdoor park filled with all things water. It is designed to teach kids how important water is to our world.  This Berlin museum lets kids learn through water play. They can build water pipes, throw sponges, and shoot water pistols all while learning about the importance of water.

Find WasserMuseum at Dillenburger Straße 57, 14199 Berlin. It is open only on weekends. Prices are 3.50€ for Adults, and 2.50€ for children. It's a super place to get wet, stay cool, let off some steam and learn some history along the way.

The Berlin Dungeon

This awesome Berlin museum for kids is part history lesson, part live show, and action rides all rolled into one crazy place. The Dungeon teaches the kids 800 years of German history with live actors, rides, and interactive exhibits. Beware! It is not for the faint of heart, and boasts one of the tallest free fall towers around, which my oldest son LOVED!   The show is about 70 minutes and you get up close and personal with the history of Berlin, with a fun and lively twist.

Tickets start at 12.00€ for children. They have tours in English daily, and on the weekends. This is a must see for kids, tweens, and teens in Berlin.

The Story of Berlin 

The Story of Berlin is an interactive museum aimed at kids.  It has over 23 themed rooms that date back to the settlement of Berlin, up through World War II, and to Berlin today. One room even hosts a giant life-sized replica of a bomb that was dropped on Berlin during the war. My kids were serious amazed at how big this bomb was in real life! They also loved the underground tour of a bomb shelter under the city streets of Berlin.

The Museum is open daily from 10-8pm, however the last entry is at 6:00pm to give you time to get through all the exhibits. The address Kurfürstendamm 207-208 (inside the mall Kudamm Karree) 10719 Berlin Follow the red footprints painted on the floor of the mall to find the entrance. This is  a great way to spend a few hours with kids in Berlin, and learn a lot of history and cool facts along the way.

DDR Museum

The DDR Museum is one of the most visited museums for kids in Germany.  Everything is interactive and designed to teach you and the kids how life was in East Berlin before the wall came down. Kids will love that they can touch things, open drawers, turn knobs, and feel how life really was in old Germany.  There are games and activities throughout the museum to keep even the most active imaginations happy and engaged. My teen son could not believe that TV's were so small, and square! The boys were both giggling at a giant phone tied to the wall.

The DDR Museum is open daily from 10 AM – 8 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 10 PM. Tickets start at 7.50€ and can be bought at the door or online.  It is located at Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 1, right on the river Spree, directly opposite the Berlin Cathedral, 10178 Berlin.  You and your kids will love this stop on your Berlin Tour.
