North Head Lighthouse

There is something romantic about lighthouses. They are both visually and metaphorically appealing, and they are usually set among beautifully rugged scenery. As a Utah native, I didn’t see many lighthouses until I had a chance to spend some time on the coasts. In the mid-1990’s I lived in Long Beach, Washington for a short time. I considered myself lucky to frequently see not one, but two lighthouses.

My favorite lighthouse is North Head Lighthouse. It is situated south of Long Beach,  not far from the mouth of the Columbia River. I took this photo in 2008, during our last family vacation in the Pacific Northwest. The first photo is my favorite Photoshop version of the original, which is shown below.

Hi there! I am the founder of Tips for Family Trips. I am a married mom of two children, ages 10 and 12, living near Salt Lake City, Utah. We took our first child on a two-week road trip when she was four weeks old and we have been traveling as a family ever since. We love to get out of the house to see and do fun things, both far away and in our own neighborhood.

  1. There was an interesting article published in the Seattle Times earlier this year about lighthouse vacation rentals in Washington State.

  2. Long Beach is on our list of places to stop next time we head to the Oregon Coast. We love a good light house and I will definitely flag this one as a great stop.

    • North Head is one of two lighthouses on the Long Beach peninsula. The other is Cape Disappointment, which is still in operation. Long Beach is a great addition to an Oregon Coast itinerary, even though it’s in Washington.

  3. I agree – lighthouses are romantic. I also like them because they’re often quite mysterious, too! Great photo of North Head Lighthouse. Looks like one I’d like to visit.
