One of the best things to do in the winter is ice skate outdoors. The Devon Ice Rink in downtown Oklahoma City is a great place to do this. It is centrally located and fun for the whole family.
My family recently spent a weekend in Oklahoma City and our night at the Devon Ice Rink made this winter trip extra special. Here are my tips for making the most of your afternoon or evening at the Devon Ice Rink.
You can rent skates or bring your own
Skates of all sizes are available for rent right next to the rink. There were plenty of staff members to help my family of six get the right size of skates. However, there is a discount price for those who would like to bring their own skates.
The Devon Ice Rink is outdoors so check the weather and dress appropriately. The night we went was very cold and we made sure everyone in our family had coats, hats, and gloves. Once you start skating, it warms up and a couple of our children shed their hats, but when we first arrived, it was chilly and we were grateful for appropriate outerwear.
Eat before you go
There is not food available at the ice rink so eat before you go. There is a private vendor who has a food cart available on most weekends, but it is not consistent in its hours of operation and was not open the night we were there.
There is a restaurant next to the rink called Park House. It is often closed to the public in the evenings for private parties, as was the case the night we were there, but it would be a lot of fun to make a reservation for before or after the time you plan to go skating, and eat dinner there.
Check the calendar for special events going on at the rink
The Devon Ice Rink has special events that would be fun to attend. The weekend we were there they were having a STAR WARS weekend with Star Wars characters. If you’re planning a trip to go skating, it would be fun to go to one of the special events and enjoy the extra perks.
Plan to spend a couple of hours or all night
Our family likes to skate for a couple of hours, but the price of admission allows you to skate as little or as long as you would like on that day.
People who don’t want to skate are welcome to watch
If you have someone in your party that doesn’t want to skate, but would still like to be part of the fun, don’t hesitate to bring them along. There are plenty of benches around the rink for viewing at no additional cost.
Enjoy the music and have fun! We arrived at the rink just as they were finishing cleaning the ice so it was slippery when we first started skating. We used extra caution so we wouldn’t fall down, but when we did, there were staff members available on the ice to help us get back up. We had a great time and hope you will too!
