UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2016

Hello!

San Diego is one of my favorite vacation destinations. It has everything: beaches, major theme parks, top zoos, excellent museums and just about anything else your family might want to do under the sun. That reminds me of another of my favorite things about San Diego. The weather is beautiful year-round.

Families have one more good reason to visit San Diego in October. Kids get free admission and meals all over the city, all month long! We’re talking about free admission to BIG attractions like LEGOLAND California, the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld.

More than 100 theme parks, museums, restaurants and hotels are offering freebies for kids. Here are some of our favorite free-for-kids destinations in San Diego in October.

San Diego in October

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is one of the best zoos anywhere and there is no limit to the number of kids under age 11 that get in free with at least one paid adult. Save $34 per child, ages 3-11. Read our tips for visiting the San Diego Zoo here.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

This sister park to the San Diego Zoo is located a few miles north of San Diego, and it’s different from any other zoo I’ve visited. Like the San Diego Zoo, all kids under age 11 get in free with just one paid adult in October. Here, it’s a savings of $36 per child, ages 3-11. Check out our full review of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

LEGOLAND tips, San Diego

LEGOLAND California

Kids get in free with paid Adult tickets to LEGOLAND California and SEA LIFE Aquarium. This is a savings of $76 per child, ages 3-12. Google gives our LEGOLAND tips a top ranking. Here’s what you need to know before you visit LEGOLAND California and SEA LIFE Aquarium.

SeaWorld, San Diego in October

SeaWorld San Diego

Kids get free admission, free meals with Shamu and free admission to the dolphin interaction programs with a paid adult at Sea World San Diego. Read more about visiting SeaWorld San Diego here.

USS Midway Museum

USS Midway Museum

This retired aircraft carrier is a hands-on history lesson for families. All kids ages 12 and under get in free with at least one paid adult. This is a savings of up to $10 per child, ages 6-12. Read our review of the USS Midway Museum here.

Catamaran Resort

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

Kids eat free with each paid adult at The Atoll restaurant at the Catamaran and kids stay free at the hotel. The Catamaran sits on the beach at Mission Bay and is just one block from the ocean. Rides on the Bahia Belle steamboat are complimentary for all guests of the Catamaran, but if you do stay elsewhere, kids ride free with a paid adult. My family stayed at the Catamaran last October. Here is my full review.

  4. No kidding! Thanks so much for sharing. You have some really great travel tips on your website. We have never been to CA with our boys, but we really want to go……and these deals would certainly make a family trip more attainable/affordable!

  5. Hello, I just stumbled across your blog while researching places to take a 3 year old in CA. I’m finding it VERY helpful. THANK YOU. For the free admission to attractions, do we need anything for this? Where can you find places that offer this? We are planning a short trip. We are flying into San Diego then driving up to San Jose, we have 5 days to do this and want to get the most out of the trip. As mentioned we have a 3 year old. What are your suggestions? I was thinking San Diego Zoo and Legoland. If we could only do one (although if kids are free this changes things) what one would you do? Also, we are not sure where to stay between Santa Barbra and San Jose, what would you suggest would be a good place to stay? Thank you for any insight you may have.

    • Each attraction has its own policy regarding free admission for kids. Some require a coupon (available online) and some do not. For details on all of the October deals for families, check out the official tourism site for San Diego at http://www.sandiego.org. Right now, the October deals and coupons are easy to find on the site. Choosing between LEGOLAND and the San Diego Zoo is tough because they are both great attractions! My vote is the San Diego Zoo, but you can’t go wrong either way.

I’m sorry that I haven’t visited the Santa Barbara or San Jose for years. They are on my short list, and hopefully we can add some recommendations before too long.

    • I just checked the San Diego Visitors Bureau at http://www.sandiego.org, and they are not promoting it yet, but if you check the Offers tab it looks like kids get in free again for 2015!
